The Province of Enna has 173.000 inhabitants. Enna, with a  population of  28.157 citizens, is geographically centered in the very heart of Sicily. Enna is the highest altitude provincial capital in Italy, and it can boast of a rich and well-conserved natural patrimony. Enna is 900 metres above sea-level with the Erei hills in the south-central area and the Nebrodi mountains in the north. Catania and Palermo are only one hour distant by car.
Enna also has a fashinating medieval central city of great historical importance. Among the most important monuments are the  Castello di Lombardia, the Duomo, the Torre di Federico II and three museums, the Alessi, the “Archeological” and the Museum of  “Fede and Tradizione”(Religious Faith and Customs). Enna's new residential area, Enna Bassa, is the site of the University, and one of the most important commercial wholesale produce areas on the island. Nearby Pergusa lake is the only fresh-water lake existing in Sicily and surrounding this is a sport cars racetrack; but the pride of the province is The Villa Romana del Casale, located about 5 km outside the town of  Piazza Armerina (about 30 kilometres from Enna) It is the richest, largest and most complex collection of late Roman mosaics in the world and it is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
No less important is Morgantina, a site of an Early Iron Age settlement (10th 7th century BC), where a Greek theatre is located and in the summer  greek tragedies and contemporary plays are performed. Local Traditions
In Sicily, the most significative tradition is the Easter week. Especially in Enna, during the annual “Venerdi Santo” celebration, fifteen religious confederations -each one dressed in their beautiful characteristic colours- solemnly file through the city streets capturing the touching and suggestive representation of the “Passion of Jesus Christ”. Surely, it is considered one of the most important and beautiful religious celebrations not only in Sicily but also in Europe. Thousands of tourists participate at this moment in the religious life of Enna and Sicily.
