Humanities, Foreign Language and Education

These courses cover three fundamental areas of knowledge: humanities, foreign language and education

The first area is particularly deepened within the degree course in Mediterranean Archaeology, which focuses on the major and most ancient Mediterranean Civilisations:
Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Minoan-Mycenaean, Greek, Phoenician, Roman, Christian and Medieval.
It is, moreover, the only degree course in the sector in Sicily and Southern Italy that provides for the teaching of Egyptology.

The second area, namely linguistics, is explored in depth in the degree course in Modern Languages and Cultures, which represents a privileged pathway in terms of the development of cultural identity and the facilitation of intercultural dialogue.

Moreover, linguistic and cultural diversity increasingly poses new challenges to contemporary society, which is called upon to respect the principles of democratic and civil coexistence and human rights.
The degree course in Languages consistently aims to overcome the ethnocentric perspective, in order to increasingly gain the perspective of otherness, complexity and relationships, essential dimensions of human existence.

The third area, the educational one, aims at promoting a solid culture in the field of education and training sciences, through the acquisition of transversal and specific knowledge, skills and competences related, for example, to the knowledge of the student, to teaching-learning methodologies, to management and teamwork techniques.

The aim is to enable the student to acquire the necessary skills to perform certain professional roles (e.g. as a primary or nursery school teacher), to design and construct training paths and effective pedagogical-didactical interventions, to deal adequately and responsively with complex educational situations.
The study courses of the training area consider, as privileged training and educational areas, those of the school, but also those of the extracurricular and training, in an epistemological framework that has as its reference horizon the integral formation of the personality in a complex society.

The essential aim of the Faculty and the degree courses that are part of it is therefore the personal, professional and scientific training of students and is inspired by the values of humanism, classicism, education and training, conceived as reference horizons and as regulatory principles in the design and implementation of cultural, social, political and economic processes.

The training offered is based on the adequate and modern functioning of structures and services.

The development of scientific and professional skills relies on the effective organisation of degree courses, the motivation and expertise of the teachers involved, stable forms of tutoring, the use of advanced teaching technologies, innovative forms of teaching and rigorous lines of research.

Particular attention is paid to international relations within the Faculty and all the related degree courses, including through mobility projects for students (e.g. the ERASMUS project) and for lecturers and researchers.
